NASCUS’ Commitment to Education for the State Credit Union System

A special message from Mary Martha Fortney, President and CEO,
April 13, 2007

NASCUS places great emphasis on providing high quality education to the state regulatory and state credit union system. Each year, we work diligently to provide a timely and diverse selection of educational offerings to our regulator and credit union members.

Remember that NASCUS educational programs are designed and produced for you, our NASCUS members. I encourage you to inform NASCUS about the educational needs of your agency or credit union so we can work to fulfill these needs.

Also, don’t forget that our educational foundation, the National Institute for State Credit Union Examination (NISCUE), offers scholarships to state examiners for our schools. Email us at offices@nascus.org for more information on NISCUE scholarships. (A special thank you to our NISCUE donors.)

NASCUS looks forward to presenting a number of schools and seminars this spring and summer. Coming up next month, based on member request, we will present a Credit Union Balance Sheet Management School, May 17-18 in New Orleans, Louisiana. As the economy continues to change, credit unions’ must adapt their balance sheet management strategies to meet the needs of their members. NASCUS encourages examiners and Credit Union Advisory Council members to participate in this important school.

During the event, Bart Salazar of Balance Sheet Solutions, LLC will provide attendees with a broad range of information on risks related to balance sheet management. He will begin with an economic update framing the broad issues of volatile markets and shifting economic risks, and then focus on effective balance sheet management, strategies and tools.

Following the Credit Union Balance Sheet Management School, we are offering a follow-up to NASCUS’ previous member business lending (MBL) schools. In Denver, Colorado, NASCUS will host a Member Business Lending Essentials Seminar, June 4-8. Commercial lending experts from Hipereon Consulting are the school faculty and will focus on key business lending examination issues such as effective member business lending policies, organizational structure for credit union commercial lending staff, loan policy essentials, underwriting and much more.

The agenda has been fully updated so attendees of NASCUS’ previous MBL seminars are welcome and encouraged to attend. We encourage credit union executives to attend as well. This is the only opportunity for credit unions to hear first-hand what concerns examiners have about member business lending!

In July, NASCUS will feature its Annual School for State Credit Union Examiners, July, 9-13, 2007 at the University of Wisconsin Business School, Madison, Wisconsin. This school is devoted to state credit union examiners. We will spend two full days enhancing examiners’ written and verbal communication skills. NASCUS encourages new and seasoned examiners to attend this event to sharpen their skills and network with examiner peers.

Near the end of the summer, NASCUS will host its benchmark event for the year – the State System Summit, August 9-11 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. NASCUS renamed its Annual Conference and Symposium to the State System Summit last year. The new focus reflects the Summit’s collaborative theme of bringing together state and federal regulators, state credit union executives, league representatives and other dual chartering supporters to address the year’s critical issues.

We have a number of top-notch speakers for this event including National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) Board member and NASCUS liaison Gigi Hyland; Dean of Western CUNA Management School Dr. Jim Likens; Executive Director of the Federation of Community Development Credit Unions (NFCDCU) Cliff Rosenthal; and others.

Rounding out the year, we have several more schools including the Senior Management Symposium, October 23-26, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and the Third Annual NASCUS/CUNA Comprehensive BSA Training School, October 28-31, Tempe, Arizona. I will talk more about those offerings and the NASCUS 2008 educational calendar in a future president’s message.
