A
special message
from
Mary Martha Fortney, President and CEO,
July 19, 2007
In just a few weeks, NASCUS members and others from the credit union system will gather in Fort Lauderdale, Florida for the 2007 State System Summit, August 9-11, 2007.
As always, the Summit will combine in depth discussions of mission critical credit union operational and examination issues with the valuable networking and social opportunities that NASCUS is known to deliver.
At the State System Summit, speakers will share their visions of the challenges facing the credit union system. D. Scott Parsons, former U.S. Treasury Deputy Assistant Secretary, will focus on the importance of public and private partnerships in homeland security and disaster recovery efforts. National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) Board member and NASCUS liaison Gigi Hyland will offer a presentation entitled “The grand Perhaps” to discuss up-to-the minute insights on regulatory and legislative issues impacting credit union operations and service.
Dr. Jim Likens will survey challenges to credit union balance sheets and Bruce Jolly, NASCUS General Counsel and partner with Venable, LLP, will discuss legal challenges and issues facing the state and federal systems. Bob Hoel of the Filene Institute and Dr. William Jackson, professor at University of Alabama and renowned capital expert, will lead a panel discussion on competing solutions for current and future credit union capital challenges. Cliff Rosenthal, National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions (NFCDCU), will discuss growth and survival strategies for small credit unions.
During the Chairmen’s luncheon, incoming NASCUS Chairman George Reynolds (GA) will share his view of the challenges NASCUS and the state system face from a regulatory perspective and the Credit Union Advisory Council Chairman Mendell Thompson (America’s Christian Credit Union) will share his views from a state credit union perspective. In addition, a panel discussion planned for August 11 will feature the leaders of NASCUS and major credit union associations sharing their views on what the system must do to position itself for future success.
Compliance and examination for Bank Secrecy Act (BSA)/Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) compliance continue to be hot topics. Craig Beach, Credit Union Service Corporation, will discuss BSA and shared branching issues in an afternoon breakout session. Check 21 and information technology are also breakout session topics.
In addition to these sessions, we have planned an information issues briefing for the Credit Union Advisory Council which will cover such topics as unrelated business income tax (UBIT), data collection, the Department of Defense proposed consumer lending regulations and more.
State regulators will have regulator-only meetings with NCUA and a NASCUS Regulators Only Session. These sessions provide opportunities for candid, confidential regulator-to-regulator discussions.
In addition to the general sessions, breakouts and luncheon speakers, NASCUS will once again this year host the district breakfasts. The district breakfasts allow state regulators and Advisory Council members from the same geographic regions to meet in smaller groups for a candid discussion of regional issues and concerns.
We look forward to seeing everyone in Fort Lauderdale for this dynamic and valuable event. More information on the Summit can be found here.
