NASCUS Participates in WOCCU International Regulators’ Roundtable

ARLINGTON, Va. — The National Association of State Credit Union Supervisors (NASCUS) joined international regulators at the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) Regulators’ Roundtable at the WOCCU 2007 Annual Conference. NASCUS participated in the two-day session, July 28-29, with nearly 50 regulators representing 15 countries including the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Belize, Ireland, Australia, Brazil and others. This is the fourth year NASCUS has participated in the roundtable.

NASCUS Chair Linda Jekel, director of the Washington Division of Credit Unions, and NASCUS President and CEO Mary Martha Fortney represented NASCUS at the Regulators’ Roundtable. WOCCU reported a total attendance at the conference of more than 2,500 representing 62 countries. The conference was co-hosted with the Credit Union Central of Canada (CUCC.)

The agenda for the roundtable included discussion on asset liability management and interest rate risk tools, alternative capital for credit unions, crisis management, reputational risk and other timely topics. Representatives from the National Credit Union Administration also participated in the roundtable.

“NASCUS gains valuable perspective from the information sharing that takes place at the WOCCU Regulators’ Roundtable meetings,” said Fortney. “Protecting the safety and soundness of credit unions is a worldwide goal and the more discussion we have on best practices, innovative approaches and emerging risks, the better we will be as regulators.”

NASCUS has a long standing relationship with WOCCU and often hosts international regulators visiting the United States to discuss the American system of credit union supervision. Fortney and NASCUS Vice President of Accreditation and Corporate Affairs Barbara Pogue are members of the WOCCU International Executive Volunteer Corps.
