New Commissioners Gather in Washington, D.C. for NASCUS Orientation

ARLINGTON, Va. — New commissioners from Alaska, Michigan and New York joined NASCUS August 6-7 for a New Commissioner’s Orientation in Washington, D.C. Over the two days, commissioners met with federal regulators, policymakers and NASCUS management to learn more about NASCUS and the credit union system.

The new commissioners who joined NASCUS August 6-7 included Lorie Hovanec, director, Alaska Division of Banking and Securities; Martin Cofsky, deputy superintendent of banks, New York State Banking Department; and Ken Ross, commissioner, Michigan Office of Financial and Insurance Regulation. Two members of Ross’ staff also joined NASCUS for the event.

“NASCUS is pleased that we can bring new commissioners to the Washington, D.C. area to welcome them to the credit union system and to meet with federal regulators and policymakers in the early part of their tenure as commissioners,” said NASCUS President and CEO Mary Martha Fortney.

The commissioners met with new National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) Chairman Michael Fryzel as well as NCUA Board member and NASCUS liaison Gigi Hyland. They also met with staff of the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee.

NASCUS held its last New Commissioner’s Orientation in October 2007. The event is held at least once a year.
