ARLINGTON, Va. —The state credit union system will join NASCUS in Seattle, Washington next week for several events including the 2008 State System Summit and NASCUS’ first Directors College.
NASCUS’ full schedule of events begins August 19 with business meetings of its leadership followed by committee meetings on August 20. NASCUS is also holding its first Directors College on August 20 and the week will culminate with the State System Summit, August 21-23.
The NASCUS State System Summit is the only annual gathering of the state credit union system. This year’s event features timely and relevant speakers, breakout sessions and opportunities for open dialogue on mission critical credit union examination and operational issues. Among the featured speakers, Summit attendees will hear from new National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) Chairman Michael Fryzel; renowned economist Jeff Thredgold; nationally known real estate specialist Richard Hagar; member business lending trainer Jim Devine; unrelated business income tax (UBIT) expert Kevin Fincher; and other system leaders. In addition, Gavin Gee, director of the Idaho Department of Finance, will discuss the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System and how this project is bringing greater uniformity and transparency to the mortgage industry.
Summit agenda topics include capital reform from the cooperative perspective, cyber crime, housing fraud, membership growth strategies, new Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACT Act) red flag provisions and other compliance topics. State regulators will also meet with NCUA for the annual Interagency Dialogue for discussion on top examination policy issues and an update on the corporate system. Many Summit attendees are coming into Seattle for the first in a series of one-day NASCUS Directors Colleges on August 20. The events are focused on enhancing directors’ understanding of critical statutory, fiduciary and regulatory responsibilities. The faculty for the Seattle event includes former NCUA Chairman Dennis Dollar and Director of Credit Unions for the state of Washington Linda Jekel.
In addition, NASCUS will hold its 2008 annual meetings of the regulator membership and Credit Union Advisory Council on August 22. NASCUS will also present its prestigious Pierre Jay Award on August 21.
