Sharon Whiddon Honored with NASCUS Pierre Jay Award

Seattle, WA — Sharon Whiddon, dedicated dual chartering advocate and recognized state regulator from Florida, was awarded the NASCUS 2008 Pierre Jay Award at the NASCUS State System Summit, August 21-23 in Seattle, Washington.

NASCUS Chairman George Reynolds (GA) presented Whiddon with the honor on August 21. Whiddon is a past NASCUS Chairman, Board member, Education Committee Chairman and long-time participant in the NASCUS Accreditation Program.

“Sharon has worked tirelessly to preserve dual chartering and actively defend state’s rights and autonomy in financial regulation,” said Reynolds. “She is well deserving of this recognition for her many years of dedication to the state credit union system.”

Whiddon joined the Florida Office of Financial Regulation as an examiner in 1972. She was the Chief of the Bureau of Credit Union Regulation overseeing Florida’s state-chartered credit unions for many years until her retirement from state government this summer. Under Whiddon’s leadership, the Florida Office of Financial Regulation achieved recognition as a NASCUS Accredited State Agency in 2004.

“It is an honor to have been selected by NASCUS and Chairman George Reynolds as the 2008 Pierre Jay Award recipient,” said Whiddon. “I believe in the principles that the award stands for and the principles and goals of NASCUS. I would like to thank George and NASCUS for recognizing me for this award.”

The Pierre Jay Award is given to individuals who demonstrate outstanding service, leadership, achievement and efforts which benefit NASCUS and the dual chartering system. The award was established to honor the memory of Pierre Jay, Massachusetts Banking Commissioner from 1906-1909 and the father of the First State Credit Union Act.

As the 2008 Pierre Jay Award recipient, Whiddon joins past Pierre Jay Award honorees including Ella Robinson, former Kentucky regulator, Mike Fitzgerald; former Michigan regulator; Gary Oakland, BECU, Seattle, Washington; Gavin Gee, Idaho regulator; Jim Blaine, State Employees’ Credit Union, Raleigh, North Carolina; George Latham, former Virginia regulator; and Texas regulator Harold Feeney.
