Cann to Lead NASCUS Credit Union Advisory Council, Veteran Credit Union Executives Continue as Directors

BOSTON, Mass. — BECU's J. Parker Cann began his two-year chairmanship of the NASCUS Credit Union Advisory Council on August 21 during the NASCUS State System Summit in Boston, Mass.

Cann, a 30-year veteran of the financial services industry, has served as both a state credit union regulator and a credit union executive. Prior to his current role as BECU's Senior Vice President and General Counsel, he was president and CEO of Columbia Credit Union, WA, and before that, the chief credit union regulator for Washington state. Cann will serve as Credit Union Advisory Council Chairman until 2011.

"My chairmanship of the Credit Union Advisory Council is occurring at a critical time for credit unions and the financial services industry as a whole," said Cann. "As we fulfill our important role as advisors to state regulators, I will continue to promote the Credit Union Advisory Council's support for state regulatory authority and the preservation of a strong state charter."

The NASCUS 2009-2010 Credit Union Executive Council, the governing body of the Advisory Council, was also announced at the meeting. Four Council Directors were re-elected for three-year terms: Ed Bibgy, Norbel Credit Union, CO; Jim Blaine, State Employees' Credit Union, NC; Catherine Tierney, Community First Credit Union, WI; and Mendell Thompson, America's Christian Credit Union, CA. Chairman Cann also reappointed Bob Fouch, Corporate Central Credit Union, WI, to the Council as its designated corporate credit union representative for a three-year term.

This year's annual meeting was the last for Immediate Past Credit Union Advisory Council Chairman Thompson, who served as the Council's leader for more than two years. NASCUS' President and CEO Mary Martha Fortney expressed appreciation to Thompson during the meeting. "Under Mendell's leadership, the Advisory Council remained a vital resource of information, perspective and guidance for our regulator board," said Fortney. "Mendell represented the state credit union system with diligence and enthusiasm during his term."

The sitting Credit Union Executive Council Directors are: Steve Behler, Kemba CU, OH; Jason Boesch, Oklahoma RE&T CU, OK; Linda Childs, Knoxville Post Office CU, TN; Drema Isaac, Central Macomb Community CU, MI; Debbie Peters, INCOL CU, PA; and Richard Rice, Teachers CU, IN.

The group also elected its officers. Tierney is the Chairman-elect and Bigby will serve as the Secretary.
