NASCUS continued its member business lending (MBL) training January 14-18, 2008 in San Diego with its first Intermediate Member Business Lending School. The school’s audience included both credit union lending staff and credit union examiners. Along with top notch trainer Jim Devine of Hipereon, Inc. this mix of regulators and industry professionals created a dynamic exchange of information for all attendees.
The NASCUS Education Committee in partnership with Hipereon Consulting designed the school to give attendees an in-depth understanding of the dynamic financial analysis process of reviewing historical operating performance and linking it to realistic financial projections when considering business loans. The school was also designed to enhance attendees’ understanding of the critical elements of commercial real estate lending, which is especially important in today’s credit and real estate markets.
Devine provided an in-depth look at financial statements and how to interpret these documents. He also walked participants through the various factors that play a role in commercial lending and helped to show the possible opportunities and threats institutions face when dealing with commercial lending.
Among the topics Devine covered were member business lending risks, business financial analysis, debt service coverage, commercial loan structuring, construction lending and commercial real estate financial analysis. Throughout the school, there was an emphasis on capital access and asset utilization for businesses and loan monitoring by financial institutions.
The majority of participants rated the school as “excellent.” According to one attendee, “NASCUS delivered an excellent MBL seminar once again! Jim Devine is knowledgeable, clear and provides pertinent examples. He teaches the best cash flow and business model analysis classes in the nation.”
NASCUS thanks the NASCUS Credit Union Advisory Council credit unions who donate to National Institute of State Credit Union Examination (NISCUE) for making this and all NASCUS education programs possible. NASCUS also extends congratulations to California examiners Lana Tom and Sean Sisser qualifying for full scholarships to the school.
NASCUS is now designing our Advanced MBL School. We plan to focus on problem member business loans, loan workouts and more. Check the NASCUS Web site for updates or email jenny@nascus.org for details.
