NASCUS Annual State System Summit Features Renowned Experts in MBL, Housing, Compliance and Regulatory Issues

February 25, 2008 - The only national gathering of the state credit union system’s leaders will take place August 21-23, 2008 at the NASCUS State System Summit in Seattle, Washington.

“At the Summit, regulators, credit union executives and dual chartering supporters from across the nation will work side by side to tackle crucial state system issues,” said NASCUS President and CEO Mary Martha Fortney. “The Summit is the cornerstone of NASCUS’ year, a time for collaboration and action on the state regulatory and credit union system’s most pressing issues.”

Joining the Summit speaker line-up are renowned credit union and financial sector experts addressing today’s critical issues such as member business lending (MBL), unrelated business income tax (UBIT), the mortgage crisis, compliance hot topics and the overall volatility in financial markets.

Economic futurist Jeff Thredgold will address Summit attendees with his slightly irreverent, up-to-the-minute "tour" of the economy, financial markets, education, government and a sneak preview of the future. Thredgold has been helping people understand the tangled maze of the economy and financial markets for over three decades.

Jim Devine of Hipereon, Inc. has been training NASCUS examiners on the essentials of MBL since 2005. He will share his views on MBL operational issues as well as where regulators should focus when looking at MBL portfolios. He is the co-creator and lead faculty member for the prestigious California Bankers Association Commercial Lending School and the Oregon Bankers Lending Institute. He is also a co-creator and lead faculty member for Credit Union Executives Society (CUES) School of Business Lending which provides business credit training to credit union staff members on a national basis.

Also on the Summit speaker line-up is Dennis Dollar, former National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) Chairman and now principal partner in Dollar Associates, LLC, a full-service consulting group focusing on credit unions and the organizations that serve them. Dollar's background is extensive in the credit union and public policy arenas. Dollar served on the three-member Board since being confirmed by the U.S. Senate in 1997, having been a member of the NCUA Board during the most far-reaching period of legislative and regulatory change in the history of the American credit union movement.

Popular NASCUS speaker Franklin Drake will focus on solutions to common credit union compliance challenges. As a partner with Smith Debnam LLP, Raleigh, NC, Drake concentrates his practice in the areas of creditors’ rights, creditors’ bankruptcy and commercial litigation. Drake has worked with credit unions, banking and financial institutions, consumer and commercial lenders, and student loan agencies to enforce contracts, minimize losses and fight fraud.

Speaking on the current housing and mortgage markets, Richard Hagar will share insights from his 30-year career as a real estate agent, real estate appraiser, instructor for the Appraisal Institute and investor. Hagar is a nationally known mortgage fraud and appraisal expert and speaker.
