Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback Announces Credit Union Administrator Appointee

July 29, 2014 Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback’s office announced that former credit union regulator Jerel Wright will replace John Smith as administrator of the Kansas Department of Credit Unions. Wright previously held the position from 1998-2005.

The Kansas Department of Credit Unions’ administrator is responsible for overseeing the daily functions of the Department of Credit Unions and the Credit Union Council.

Wright’s appointment as administrator must be approved by the Kansas Senate. He would serve a four-year term. Wright currently serves as assistant vice president of consulting and compliance at the Kansas Credit Union Association.

Smith, whose recent four-year term officially ended Dec. 31, will continue to serve as the department’s administrator until August. He has held the position since 2006.

“John was an asset to the Kansas Department of Credit Unions as well as to NASCUS, and he will be missed,” said NASCUS President and CEO Mary Martha Fortney. “We thank him for his efforts on behalf of state-chartered credit unions and on behalf of state-chartered institutions in general throughout his years as the department’s administrator.”

At the same time, Fortney welcomed Wright to his position. “We look forward to working with Mr. Wright,” she said. “He will be a great addition to the Kansas Department of Credit Unions.”
