NCUA sets Oct. 27 for budget briefing
Sept. 7, 2016 – A public briefing about the 2017 NCUA budget is scheduled for Oct. 27, the agency stated today in a release.
The agency also stated that a draft budget will be available the week of Oct. 9; deadline for comments on the budget will be Nov. 4, at 5 p.m.
The Thursday briefing, from 2 to 4 p.m. ET in the agency’s boardroom in Alexandria, Va., was initially announced in June. Then, NCUA Board Chairman Rick Metsger said the briefing would include an opportunity for the public to comment on the agency’s spending plan.
He also said earlier this summer that the budget briefing would be more comprehensive than briefings previously held by the agency including, for example, release of more details on the proposed budget before the briefing, “so stakeholders can review and analyze the information before they participate.”
In a statement today, the NCUA leader noted the agency’s commitment to greater transparency as part of its “Continual Quality Improvement initiative.” Metsger stated that the briefing is part of fulfilling that commitment. “While final budget decisions remain with the Board, we want to hear the constructive comments stakeholders can bring to the table,” Metsger stated. “This agency remains a prudent steward of its finances, but we always can consider suggestions for ways to make improvements.”
Persons wishing to attend the briefing in person must submit a request to the agency within one week following the release of the draft budget the week of Oct. 9, NCUA also stated. The agency stated the reason is that meeting space is limited. However, the agency also stated it would provide a livestream broadcast of the proceedings through its website for those unable to attend in person.
