NASCUS and Iowa Division of Credit Unions Launch State-wide Board Chair Event
ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA – In tandem with the Iowa Division of Credit Unions, the National Association of State Credit Union Supervisors (NASCUS) proudly announces a new event for all Iowa credit union Board Chairs. The Superintendent’s Day: Board Chair Forum will take place on Thursday, April 27, 2023, in beautiful downtown Des Moines, IA.
“I’m pleased to be able to host Superintendent’s Day for Board Chairs on April 27, 2023. Building a cohesive network of board leadership and increasing engagement across our state system is essential to the vitality of Iowa’s credit unions. This event will focus on the evolving topics affecting our industry with state and national speakers, open the door for dialogue, and provide an opportunity for networking with colleagues and peers,” commented Katie Averill, Superintendent of the Iowa Credit Union Division/ Director of Commerce and Vice Chair of the NASCUS Regulatory Board of Directors.

NASCUS was founded on principles of collaboration to strengthen the credit union system. Providing this forum for dialogue between credit union directors and their state regulator encourages a dynamic exchange of ideas of perspectives which benefits credit unions, their members, and the Division of credit unions,” commented Brian Knight, President and CEO of NASCUS.
This event will expand Board Chair networks by providing engagement opportunities in a roundtable exercise, as well as featuring highly respected national and state-level speakers, including:
- Appointed by Governor Reynolds in 2017, Katie Averill serves as Superintendent of the Iowa Credit Union Division and Director of Commerce. With oversight of 77 state-chartered credit unions and approximately $31.2 billion in assets, Averill is responsible for the safety and soundness standards for 99% of Iowa’s credit union members.
- A longtime economic and community development professional, Debi Durham serves as Executive Director of the Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) and the Iowa Finance Authority (IFA). Selected by the Governor, Durham has turned the IEDA into a successful public-private partnership, landed billion-dollar economic development projects for Iowa, and worked tirelessly to expand trade and investment opportunities for the state.
- Author, consultant, and international speaker Tim Harrington has inspired credit unions for three decades to be excited about change and push the envelope. Tim has worked with credit unions in all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, and the Virgin Islands. His progressive ideas and broad knowledge of credit union issues have made Harrington a valuable resource for credit unions nationwide.
- Brian Knight was appointed President and CEO on January 1, 2022. He joined NASCUS in 1998 and has served as NASCUS’ general counsel since 2007. With an extensive background in legislative and regulatory analyses and a comprehensive knowledge of the state and federal credit union regulatory system, Knight testified before numerous state legislatures on behalf of state regulatory agencies and participated in industry strategic planning sessions.
